The REAL SCOOP on the 914/928

I just got a copy of the December 1990 Panorama article from a good gentleman named Steve Faddis..... faddis@home.com Thanks Steve!

I have copies of the article if anyone wants a forwarded copy, let me know.

Did a little phone calling and found that the original 914/928 now resides in Virginia....! It was originally fabricated by Precision Motion/Kravig Engineering in beautiful downtown Riverside CA. Don Kravig, Bill Driskell and Rex Rhodes were the instigators. The car had to be lengthened five inches and used a 915 transaxle (from a 78 SC) that had the ring gear flipped so that it would five forward gears instead of reverse...

I asked Don (909-784-0425) if there was any way not to have to add the five inches...and his comment was, the water pump and all the other pulley driven stuff was in the way. To move them, like some people do on the Chevy v8 powered cars would have been more fabrication than adding the lenghth in the wheel base. The outside wheel base stayed the same.

The car was first displayed at the 1990 Moneterey Parade. It was named "Moody Blue" as it did not want to start at Monterey and it was painted "Mexico Blue". Panorama quoted Don as saying "$40-50K and you bring the motor and car, you too can have one.."

At race trim the car weighed in at 2500 lbs and 280hp. They used a 1980 928S euro motor....not much else in the article of technical merit. The car raced a time trial at Willow Springs in August 1990.

Mike, YOU DA MAN! Great find, great article.
As I stated I don't agree that the wheel openings HAVE TO be moved back. I'll know soon enough. Thanks

Great find , I knew I had seen it before and I have that issue of PANO, just read it over again and yes it is definatley a "sales ploy" for Porsche ware, and thats too bad. The article ditz's the american V8 conversions, and then it goes on to say that they used the complete cooling system design and parts from "a company in LA that does 914 conversions" Well I am sure that Andy down at "RENEGADE HYBRIDS" would have enjoyed a little recognition for helping them along the way instead of being considered just some generic LA business.

I think anything we all do to achive our own personal vervanna is just fine. After two days of fitting I've come to the conclusion that they must have moved the suspension and wheel openings by choice and NOT necessity. Things are starting to come to nicly. I agree with GRUPPE 5. It would have been nice to give the contributors a pat on the back. But it was ten years ago. I don't understand how a couple of guys working on the car in their spare time. could spend 40,000.00 to 50.000.00 to build a car If they had the car and the motor. if This project hits 3000.00 including the price of the motor I'll let you know.

Hey Paul, I'm thinking about a test drive day. I'll let you slide down into the drivers seat, tickle the key, buzz the throttle, and feel the silky smooth power come to life. But no test drive without a depends. (LOL) I think someone should bid on that motor. I can't be the only crazy here.

Yes, I've been using a tail shift for the test fit,but I have a 73 side shift for the final installation. I'll be doing some modifications to the case, but I'm not ready to spill the beans on that part of the project yet. I'm getting impatience with the guy that was suppose to order my aluminum! It's holding the whole thing up! The cars trimmed and ready for mounts!
