Not a morning girl
 

My '75 2.0 does not like waking up. After 20 minutes or so after she drive like a dream. But until then, hesitation, sputtering, and just generally grumpy.

Background: was originally a carbed 1.8 and I put in this FI 2.0. The AAR is missing, but is otherwise complete. I figure this has a something to do with it, but I can't find one anywhere.

Any hints to ease her morning grumpiness?

Sounds rich to me. The AAR adds air when the engine is cold. Without the AAR you run rich assuming all else is ok, until it warms up.

So find an AAR or rig a 1.8L AAR to work, they are still available new. If you still have your original AAR they can usually be repaired.

No, Jeff-you don't run rich without the AAR. You simply idle too low. (Hmm, that in itself may wind up giving you an off mixture, but that is purely because the engine is running at a lower RPM than was intended.)

20 minutes sounds like a long time for it to simply be the missing AAR. Could be, though.

Bad news: The AAR has been unavailable for a while. Used is just about your only bet, unless someone has a few NOS ones sitting around in their warehouse. Be prepared to pay for them, though.

I dont get it. A/F mixture...air plus fuel...every car needs one...

TS2 supplies extra idle circuit fuel...and the AAR pumps in the extra air needed to balance the A/F mixture at idle. No extra air...equals a rich mxture...what am I missing?

TS2 and the AAR are independant. TS2 causes a rich mixture, but does that whether or not the AAR is open. Remember, when the AAR is open more air gets into the manifold. The MPS "sees" this air and causes the FI to put more fuel in to go with it. Just like most vacuum leaks in a D-jet engine.

The AAR does not have a significant effect on the mixture.

I'm afraid my troubleshooting skills are a bit lacking- any suggestions on what I should try? It may be time I contribute to my local porfessional mechanic's Xmas fund....

Best suggestions: Go read all of the D-jet info at http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders .

Then go through your ignition system very very thoroughly. Make sure the valves are adjusted and that you have good compression. Make sure you have good fuel pressure (29 PSI) when the car is warmed up.

Then start checking all of the FI parts.
