compufire - tach does not work

I installed a Compufire module and now my factory tach does not work. I tried another factory tach that I had and it does not work either. I hooked up an aftermarket Sun tach and it works. As far as I know, both tachs work. Any clues?

When you hooked up the Sun tach, was it at the connections at the dash or at the coil? The tach is fed by the black & purple wire at the coil so you will need to make sure the wire to spade lug connection is good and on the correct coil terminal. We have a Compufire module on our 1974 had have never had tach problems with it. Good luck

Using the same wiring point at the dash. I have taken a tach and hooked up directly at the coil to try it there. Maybe I just had bad luck with 2 tachs at one time and need to get them checked.

I ran into the same problem when I installed my Crane XR-700 unit (I know that it's not the same unit). Couldn't even get an rpm reading with my dwell/tach meter, which worked fine with the standard points/condesor setup and on my wife's minivan.

Wish that I could be more helpful, but after following the Crane tech support tips, my tach still wasn't working. Eventually, i jazzed up the shutter disc and put the points/condensor back in until I have more time to find a solution.

You may want to contact the tech support people at Compufire to see if they can give you some suggestions. I know that Crane sells a tach adapter device which can be used when all else fails. If you run out of other options, Compufire may have a similar "solution"

Best of luck.

The older tachs tend to not like the type of signal from the newer electronic ignitions.

Solutions are

1. To get a tach amplifier
2. Replace the internals on your tach to accept the new signal from the newer ignition. (this is what I did on my gauges)
3. Get an adapter to convert the new signal to the older type signal.

Call Compufire and see what they say.
