gas tank problems

in the middle of pullin an all nighter last night I found some rust on my gas tank, and on further inspection I have no idea how it wasn't leaking. I hit it with a wire brush and it fell through.... I know I can fix the hole back up, well holes, but what do I use to coat the inside?

Never have used it but POR-15 has a fuel tank repair kit, http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=316 or fuel tank sealer http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=163. But it might be better to invest the 50 bucks into pulling the tank and taking it to a repair shop.

already have the tank out and some of it pulled apart. I'm gonna weld up the holes. That's not a big deal. I was cleanin it out a little bit ago and had it catch on fire and singe the hairs off my right hand.... I'll let it sit for awhile before i go back to workin on it.

I got to admit you got balls to weld on that gas tank. I suppose it's safe now if it already caught on fire and burned off the fumes. I'd run a some car exhaust into it anyway and fill it with some inert gas (but not from a car running too rich of course), or some CO2 (MIG welder or fire extinguisher). Good luck and be safe.

I'm gonna fill it with water a couple times and make sure it's all washed out first.

I think Craig (Camp 914) Laughlin in Portland has an unrusted one (or more) if you decide yours is too far gone.

well I'm goin to a swap meet down there I think he's gonna be at next weekend, so I'll know by then whether mine's worth saving or not, and I guess it depends on his price.

The Por 15 tank restoration kit works as advertised. I did mine last year with good results but the job is a bit messy. If you have the opportunity to buy a good used tank, this might be a better/quicker option.

You'll spend about $50 on the restoration kit and two days between cleaning, etching, application and cure times.

if it's as nice as said I'd like it. Just got done welding it all up, and it's ok, but if the coating stuff's gonna be that expensive I might as well buy yours.

I will bring it with me to the swap meet. You can decide when you see it, holds fuel and it doe's not have rust spots.
