Five lug conversion question

SmileWavy Hey, have any of you 914-6 conversion people ever adapted the rear 911 parking brake to the 914 when doing the running gear?

I'm getting ready to do this phase of the project (Phase 1: engine was completed last year, and it's great! 2.2T). I found a set of front struts/brakes and rear hubs/brakes from a 73 911T that will serve as my new set up. I'd rather not lose my parking brake, so I believe that I have two choices (maybe three).

1) keep the stock 914 brakes in the rear.
2) Use the new rear (vented) and adapt the drum set up for the parking brake
3) rebuild my original rear calipers with a spacer to accommodate the vented rotors.

Any thoughts?
Daniel

It has been done and discussed on this BBS a couple of times. I used to remember the member name of the person who posted the pictures, but I forget now. Maybe it was "wilco"? A search will hopefully turn up the thread.

Thanks. I found it, and that helped tremendously. As an alternative, do you know if the spacers in the rear 911 M calipers can be used on the 914s? I want to use the vented rotors. Could I just split my 914s and insert the spacers from the 911s keeping the 914 style parking brake?
Will the 911 M calipers perform better? They look pretty much the same to me -- same small pads, but perhaps bigger pistons?

I've already got all the parts for the conversion, so it's just a matter of choosing the best/easiest approach.

Thanks again!
Daniel

I believe it can be done--but you will need a complete set of M calipers with spacers to raid for parts. (Longer bolts, longer pad retaining pins, etc.) You will also need to find the square-section O-rings that go between the spacer and the caliper half.

You can Take the 914 rears to a machine shop and have the spacers made that will allow you to use vented rotors with stock calipers.Steve

Daniel,

M caliper pistons are larger on 84-89 Carreras. The spacers on M caliper 84-89 were larger too. If you use an M caliper system on a 914, you will need spacers btwn the trailing arm and the caliper

And it's a very close fit. If you use rears, the pads will actually hang over the edge of the rotor. I put M's from the front of an early 911 on the rear. They centered on the rotor perfectly, but they needed spacers and at bit of grinding on the caliper casting to clear. And I elongated the mounting holes about and 1/8" on the caliper. Be careful with this!

It is a waste of time to put the vented rotors on the back. Unless you are doing just for the look install stock 914/6 rear rotors and use the 914 calipers. Most of the braking improvement is in the front.
Are you racing the car? If so then who cares about the parking brake and use 911 M calipers in the back.
For the street the 914 rears are great.

IMHO, vented rotors in the rear are a good thing if one is tracking the car and one has a big 6 cyl power plant. It is difficult to duct the rears, so the added metal helps to min brake fade.

Of couse there is the 'looking cool factor' of having cross drilled Carrera Rotors and 5 lug Fuchs on ones 914 :D
