Trailing arm nuts
I'm going to be removing one of the trailing arms on my 914. The Haynes manual says that the self locking nuts that fasten them to the ears should be replaced. Is it really necessary to replace them? If so, would I be able to find them at my FLAP, or are they special?

I went to a screw and bolt store, and they had them. I believe it is a 22mm outer size, cannot remember the inner thread size...take the old one with you and have them match it

ALWAYS replace suspension nuts. DO you really want to re-assemble with 30 year old rusty corroded nuts? They are cheap at the harware store, just get some aircraft self-sealing nuts and you should be ok.

I don't think there is enough exposed threads to use a nylok type. The original is fairly slim, IIRC, and is a lock nut by way of distortion. If it goes on with good resistance, I don't see why you can't use the orginal nut. That would be better than using an out-of-spec nut.

There's no way you're heading to the local hardware store
to pick up a M14x1.5 slotted locking nut. Plus I agree with Zeke the design makes it re-usable. Mark S. '70 914-6 |

Wouldn't recommend using a nylok if the original equipment wasn't. Porsche uses those funky slitted self locking nuts where excessive heat would soften a nylok. Replace like with like; it's kinda crucial for those pieces to remain fastened, especially on a hard corner at speed.
