Anybody ever try machining rear hubs?
More specifically, for the five lug conversion, has anyone ever tried machining the splines on the 914 stub axle to fit the 911 rear hub?
I've got the complete rear running gear (hubs, rotors and calipers) from a 911 that I'd like to use. I like the hub because it is nice and heavy duty, but of course, the stub axle won't work. Seems like it would be possible to have the 914 machined to mate with the 911 -- or am I completely insane?? Thanks! The splines would be more correctly "hobbed" not machined.
So, have a machinist cut you some axle shafts and have each end splined for the cv joint you want to use. Or use the 911 hubs in the 914 trailing arm. Believe the bearing ID is the same and the axle a little shorter so you have to have a 1/2" spacer machined for the inboard cv joint. |
Why go to all that trouble? Get 944 turbo stub axles and CV joints. Make usre that you get the ones from the 944 with the aluminum trailing arm. The stub axles fit an early 911 (i.e. 914/6) hub, and the CV joint is splined the same as a 914/4 axle. It's a true bolt together, and you get a bigger, heavier duty outboard CV joint. If you want a bigger inboard joint too, find the transmission drive flanges from a 75 911 with a 915 transmission. They will bolt into the 914 transmission, and they have the same size and 6 bolt pattern as the 944 turbo CV joint. And don't forget the gasked for the 911 transmission flange when assembling.
