914 V-8 conversion engine question
Well, i went over to Scott's house and picked up all the empty propel bottles.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/fles.gif ....now i have some $$$ to do some more work on my v-8 project.
What's the best cam / carb combo? i've got a SBC 302 ? |
|
Hey Joe, you should be bold and go with about a 292 duration and a 488 lift. That should give you a nice lopey idle and plenty of power to scoot right along. Be sure to get the billet intermediate plate and do not use first gear. As for the carb, you should just pick up the Edelbrock 650 spreadbore. I think it will work best for you.

Hey Miles, did you spell Camaro wrong? I tried the link and it fails. Lets try this one. www.camaro.com

call the edelbrock tech line. they are very helpful. Vic edel brock raced oen ofthe original Camaro 302s and tehy have developed several cams for that mojo combo

I made the mistake of having an RV cam in my 350 chebby powered 914, I always wanted to change to a cam that would give me more top end but never got around to it. The RV cam doesn't work well with a 901. It pulls real hard from the bottom but falls on it's face at 5200 rpm.
Talk to the cam manufacturer and tell them you want the powerband to go from 3800 to 6500 (flat tappet) or 3400 to 6800 rpm for a roller lifter set up. They will be able to match the other compnents and your heads and give you the cam you want. BTW, you probably don't want to spin it that fast but you will want to have the ability to properly match the gear ratios. Hope you have a friend with a gas station ;) |
I just remebered something:
Rod Simpson advertises a special 914 V8 cam he came up with that supposedly revvs forever and still gets 30 mpg. I don't know how but that's what he says. Check his website or give him a call, he's real friendly to talk to. |
I'd love to have a 302 for my conversion but they don't seem readily available or inexpensive. I thought I'd start with a 327 or 2-bolt 350, then later put in a 283 rotating assy, appropriate heads/ cam/ manifold/ carbs for a pseudo-302. Keep us posted as to what combo you use!

Hey Hendrix that was a good one - The guy I work with kept telling me to "open it in a different window, I wanna see it too........oh"
-"Let's git us some pork rinds, an' head on downta the crick" |
cant go wrong with the "151" camshaft from Chevrolet. It is the original 350hp, 327 cam. This would work well in a 302. If you could find a factory aluminum Z-28 manifold, you'd be in hog heaven.

edelbrock suposedly copied and improved upon teh Z 28 to come up with the Performer intake
