OT - Audi S4

Hi all,

Not 914 related, but still German, so still good. I'm looking at an 1994 Audi S4. Seems like a real nice car. 227hp and all wheel drive from a turbo 5 cylinder. Every option you can get. It would make a great winter car and summer cruiser for long trips. I was wondering if anybody here has any experience with them? Any opinions, advice, tips? All comments welcome.

Thanks,

Check out www.audiworld.com (sorry my hyperlink isn't working right now). They can get you info on any Audi. Search for the forum on the old generation S4. Good luck, those 5 cyl turbo engines are tanks. I know of some that get ~320 easy out of them. FYI they were the basis for the 900HP Group B Rally cars

It's a real trip to hammer the gas in the rain...and launch hard in a straight line with zero drama.

Great cars, my other car is an Audi A8 Quattro. I've owned Audis since 1981, I'm on my 4th and it's the 3rd Quattro. There ain't no goin' back once you've had one.

I drove a car like the one you're looking at and should have bought it. You will NOT be unhappy and there is a great Audi club newsletter. Follow the link above and you'll find it. Unfortunately the BBS isn't nearly as good as the one our host provides on this site.

Subaru sells their stuff with nice flat four and six cylinder engines and they power all four weels with something very similar to what Audi calls "Quattro". The good thing is they do not cost you an arm and a leg.

Subaru would be my second choice (and an excellent one) if I didn't have customers and suppliers to cart around so often. I really like that new Baja, looks like a nice all-around vehicle.

Somehow a Subaru just doesn't say "I'm a successful salesman" like an Audi. On the other hand, it does say, "I'm smart with my money".

Touareg, anyone? The less expensive Cayenne.

Subaru isn't German, though! I have nothing against them, and I really love the WRX. Almost bought an 86 Subaru wagon last winter, in fact.

I wasn't really looking for a car, but this S4 came up for sale, and it looks real nice, and very luxurious for the money, so thats why I'm asking. So, for right now, all I'm really thinking about is this S4. If it turns out to be a POS, then I'll just keep driving my Escort. Keep the advice coming though, it's been great so far!

Thanks,

I had a 1997 A4 Quattro 2.8 V6 that was awesome. Too small for a four person family road trip but tons of fun when it was just me in the drivers seat. Now I've got a 1990 V8 Quattro and for all it's weirdness, it's still a really cool car.

I wish I had done more resaerch though. What I thought was a great deal turned out to be kind of a dog. AudiWorld, like Nathan pointed out, is a great resource.

Audi 5000 Turbo ... the first car I ever drove. The transmission went KABOOOM in Mexico and my dad and I pushed it across the border.

Those were the good 'ole days.
