big problem

So I'm making a left turn at a stop light and I pop the car into second and floor it. Only problem is I didn't have it all the way in gear and when I floor it I hear a loud popping noise.

Next thing I know, my car's not moving. I can shift the shifter but when its in gear nothing happens, like only the gearbox is switching not the tranny. Basiclly the car is never leaving nutral

I messed up big here, what do I do?!?!?!?!?

Thanks

Adam

Broken Pinon. Stripped drive Hub, As you sure you are getting it in Gear? the Cone screw may have fallen out.

Actually I'm not sure if I'm getting into gear, infact I dought I am. The shifter moves all the way as if I should be in gear but I don't think it is. btw, whats a cone screw? and if that falling off is my problem how hard/easy is it to fix?

Thanks

Adam

Your pushin' what, less than 100hp? Your tranny is built tough.
Check the plastic shift linkage bushing @ the firewall. If it's broken U get really strange results. While your at it - check ALL of the shift linkage. You will not believe how much difference replacing all of those 30+ year old plastic parts makes. You might even (occationally) put it in first without a nick... No??? ME either!!! hehehe

How much is this stuff to fix? Keep in mind I'm a highschool student who barely had enough money for the car in the first place

ya... I feel really cool now. When I pull up to a stop light and everyone's lookin at me checkin out my cool car and then all of a sudden the light turns green and it wasn't all the way in gear and it grinds.....ya.......oh well I'm gettin alot better fast at shifting

My guess is that one of your axles has fallen off. That should be easy to check; just get on your hands and knees and look at both sides of the gear box. If your shifter still feels "normal", but the car doesn't move when you let out the clutch, the axle thing might be it. I "induced" this failure on my '75 some years ago, trying to put down a little tire in a parking lot. I was a lot drunker then, than I am now.

I don't think second gear is a good gear to start off in, unless you are going downhill, or you just want to wear out the clutch.

Let us know what you find!

Ed

PS Cone screws hold the rear shift linkage bar in position. You can buy these and all the shifter bushings you need for pretty cheap here at PP.

I second what Ed said, mostly likely a CV problem.

Thanks Ed,

My dad just told me he did that racing out of his drvieway and now is relieved because thats an easy fix compaired to getting a new tranny. I'm relieved too because I didn't wanna have to find out how a highschool student makes 1000 bucks fast.

Adam

PS I was already moving when I shifted into second.

I agree with the shift linkage idea - It's probably something simple, and you'd be surprised at how easy and cheap it is to fix.
BTW, I've had mine pop out of first at a light too, woo-hoo! A loud thunk, then BUH-WIIIIING!" The worst part is waiting for the rpms to fall so I can "casually" put it back in first.
No-ones been around to see that. Yet..........
Let us know:)
Cheers,
Jeff
