Got Heat??
OK, I've endured the cold long enough... I've spent all my money on engine parts, so I have been putting this problem off.
I am not sure what the piece looks like that I am missing, and there are very few 914s in my area, so I don't have a reference. I am missing some sort of elbow-shaped piece that connects the heater box to the place where the fan is routed through the cooling tins. It is a '75 if that makes a difference. I have looked through the site here and also through many magazines -- no luck. Any info would be great. A place to buy it would be terrific. I think the piece you need is called a J-tube, it connects to the heat exchanger port, penetrates the engine sheetmetal shelf and via platic flex ducts, connects to the fan. The fan turns on, blows air through the J-tube and heat exchanger into the car body ducting and cabin. I don't think I have ever seen a picture in Haynes or elsewhere other than maybe the Charlie Der White exploded diagrams and factory manuals.
Call Tom at Pelican Parts. He often has used ones available. |

If Tom can't find you a used one, you could either make your own out of sheet metal (it is a fairly simple part) or perhaps find a heater hose that could be modified to work.
Trick is it is a rectangular attachment so you'd have to make a little collar to screw on to both ends and attach the hose in the middle. Good luck. |

Almost forgot, for fabricating a metal one, try scrounging in the tailpipe adapter section of your local auto parts store for raw material. If you find the right part, a little work with a hacksaw and hammer should get you there.
