smoking problems

every once in awhile my car will cough up a little smoke out the tail pipe, but usually it's gone within a few seconds, but today it started smoking and didn't stop for a really long time. It seemed to be running fine, just puffing alot of smoke. Why does it doe this and is there anything I can do to fix it.

What color smoke? Black, white, blue?

Black is soot, and is caused by a very rich mixture.

White is water vapor, a little of which is normal when burning hydrocarbons but a lot of which shows something very odd going on. It can also, rarely, be unburned fuel.

Blue is oil smoke. Oil is getting into the combustion chamber somehow and burning. Valve guides and rings are the main suspects there.

Adding to DD's questions: When does the smoke come out? When accelerating? When coasting downhill with the car in gear? While idling? Only after starting? After sitting while hot?

it's oil smoke, and it only happens after it had been run hot for awhile, let sit til it's cool, and then right after start up, like within the first 2 or 3 minutes.

it's got 10w30 in it right now and I have no idea how many miles are on it. Looks like the care itself has just a hair over a hundred thousand. It runs strong, so I don't know what's goin on.

oh and skline I prefer the gum

Seems like a touch of oil is sneaking around your rings on expansion, and it burns off when you crank it... like even some lower mile cars do a very small amount..

How long does it take to stop smoking?

You can go heavier with the oil.

usually it'll burn off in just a second or two, but today it lasted a couple minutes so I got kinda worried.

just got done checking and I was only on the low mark on the dip stick. I sure thought I burnt off alot more oil than that, must have just been burning good. The car seems to run fine now, but it just scared me this morning.
