Angry insurance....

I've been trying to find insurance for my 72 1.7.......and I"m not having very good luck.... My parents want me to get it on my own, so I'm trying that right now. I'm 18, almost 19, with no accidents or tickets, and I'm going to college and getting better than a B average. (3.85 accum in high school and college just started) I got a quote from geico at 275 a month, and 190 a month from progressive.....and that was for basic coverage on the progressive one and not much more on the geico one...Seems to me that this car could be classified with air cooled bugs and stuff like that. About the same amount of power, and they might handle better, but the two are very similar in many ways, but when I was insuring my 71 vert it was only 65 a month...what am I doing wrong?

Well, I am sure it has to do with your age. Mine is about 34 a month and that is full coverage with a $50.00 deductable. But I am over 40 with no record of tickets or accidents in the last 20 years. I know, they only go back 3 in DMV but the insurance companies can go back even farther with their own little clearing house database. Yup, that's right, they store all information about everyone in a database that the insurance companies all tie into. They go back like 10 or 15 years. If you have ever filed a claim, you are in there and they know about it. They can check your DMV when you first get insurance somewhere and that information is stored and they do it every 3 years to update their records. Good luck.

Wow, I'm surprised it's so much for a 914. I think when I was around 19-20 I had to pay $1500-$1700 a year for my Mustang 5.0, which had a performance surcharge and was still worth something vs. being automatically totalled like it would be now.

What is the difference if you have them quote you for something like an 85 toyota tercel station wagon or some other worthless, boring car?

each quote was taking me 20 minutes to do and they wanted the vin too... but I know my bug was only like 60 and my 81 gmc pickup (which for some reason they think is a caballero, or a gmc el camino) is only a little over a hundred a month. I think if they knew it was a long box pickup it'd be even less, but they won't change it, they say they're goin off the vin, and they have the right info on that.

If its not a daily driver and will be covered try Antique insurance.....JT Taylor, Haggerty, I have 3 older cars on Antique insurance....I think its less than 2500 miles per year....keep it covered.....and try less than $100 for the entire year.....I have 3 cars on the policy all classics and I paid about $140 for all 3 for the year...you get discounts as you ad...Farmers who i insure my Trooper with would not give me comprehensive....so whats the use.......try antique if its not a daily driver..... Anybody else have antique insurance ?

They can usually estimate cost without a VIN number. I've done this with Geico for both Porsches I've owned before buying them.

well I just went back and changed the car to an 88 honda civic, and I got the same price. Must just be the fact that I'm 18 and on my coverage, not my parents.

You don't even want to know how much my insurance is. Male, early 20's with 4 insured cars. I always need a few drinks after writing that check…

Oh yea, if you don't plan on putting many miles on the car tell them! AAA requires odometer readings; with different rates based on how many miles you put on the car. Farmers used to just ask what % each car was driven. I'd bet the insurance companies you called around to could cut you a break if you don't put many miles on it. If they want to know how many miles you plan on putting on it, give a conservative estimate. If you didn’t actually call, and just did some internet look up, I would bet the insurance company figured some where around 12,000 miles/yr. As long as you’re not commuting to college I think you’ll find your not going to be driving as much as you used to.

Yes its your age, not your record. Checked on Clays, going to run around $ 2000.00 a year for just liability, they would not even do a quote for collision. They say the cost would be the same for most any car he would have. Not fair to someone who's not done anything wrong.

I am with Geico, I'm almost 39 years old. I pay around $750 a year for 2 cars, and that is comprehensive.

I was you once, basically the same rate as 1982.

Oh yes.. it hurts.

I'd check with State Farm- I just got my restored vw squareback (2.3L 102 x 71 type 4 powered) with 15,000 agreed value with comprehensive, no deductible, and flatbed towing- a whopping $9.80 a month.

Take care,

already checked state farm, and yes I am commuting to school and back... I checked progressive with my truck because they won't quote on a car older than 22 year, and the otehr places tehy gave me were like half their cost. I think I'm just gonna try to talk my dad into putting me on his insurance, and then it won't be anywhere near as expensive.

Wow, makes me happy for my insurance. In Saskatchewan, we have Province run insurance. Age doesn't make a difference, although a clean record does. For my 914, I pay just over $400 a year, and for my 1994 Audi S4, I pay just over $1000 a year. While there is a lot wrong with government run insurance, I can't argue with their rates. Much better than privatized.

It is your age and location, I paid about a $100 a month for liability on my 914 when I was 18. I am 30 now and pay $800 a year for full coverage on my 97 VW. Search around some more some of the lesser know companies can have better rates and service than the big giants. I am with American National, they have been good to me for the last 8 years.

To all other, read your policies. I am connected to the collision repair business and dealing with them at when it comes to that point is to late. Progressive seems to have a policy about using aftermarket parts.

Hey Biggy,
I had the same problem finding someone to insure me when i was looking for insurance for my 1969 VW Beetle (both of them). I am 26 (was 19 when i own my first one). State farm was the only one who would insure me at that time. After I Moved to California, the only company who would insure me because of the age of my car was GEICO. It was very resonable, like $32 a month. I got into an accident that was supposidy "my falut" and they bumped my insurance to like $72 a month! I was 22 at the time. I thought that was pretty rediculous for a VW. So i switched to Mercury. Even with my accident and age and a 1969 VW beetle (funny how i relplaced the recked Bug with the same year huh) they offered me $42 a month for liabilty with an added coverage range of 25,000-50,000 instead of the minimum of 20,000-40,000.
I just recently got into another accident, but my rate hasn't changed as of yet. I will let you know if there is a significant change from this Insurance agent, just FYI.
Hope this helps you. And Yes, because you are a Male and your current age, those two things have alot to do with your current quoted rates. It will start going down after age 25, as long as you can keep your record clean. Good luck and KEEP LOOKING! I had called about 12 companies befor I found someone reasonable.
