Color of injectors

Noticed our Project 914 was running great until you would hit about 3500 RPM or about 55mph and it wouldn't give you anymore.

We popped the #2 injector to test, and noticed it wasn't spraying any fuel. Thus, we pulled all the injectors for a good cleaning. While doing so we noticed we have a mix match set of injectors.

1. Yellow wire connector, black tip only number or markings is "84"

2. Yellow wire connector, yellow tip, 0-280-150-009 and where the "84" is on injector #1 is the number "162"

3. Black wire connector, black tip, 0-280-150-003

4. Black wire connector, black tip, 0-280-150-005 however this one has a VW part number 0-22-906-031

What is the correct injector, and should we just order four new ones and forget the cleaning?

The "right" injector (as defined by all of my Bosch references) for a 1.7L (think that's your displacement) is a 0 280 150 009, which has a yellow plug. There are others that are reported to work, and/or to have been installed by the factory.

I don't have my book with me right now, so I can't ID the others you have. The 003 shows up in a web reference to the Citroen DS21 (yup, it used D-Jet, too), no data on the 005.

Brad,

Thanks for the info! I might have to buy you a beer Thursday night in Phoenix, and give you a free subscription to 9 Magazine. I'm staying over night before heading to LA for the Sharktoberfest 928 show in Fullerton.

If I'm not mistaken, the 1.7L injectors are yellow and the 2.0 injectors are green.

The black ones might be early 1.7 injectors. I have a couple of those and mine were the right part number for the 1.7, just an earlier revision.

and 1.8's may be gray

The 1.8s may also be blue, and possibly there were some purple ones...

But both black and yellow were used on 1.7 engines. Mostly yellow.

The part numbers, however, are the final determiner of what is "right" for an engine. For instance, there are two different part numbers for the green 2.0 injectors; one for 73-74, and one for 75-76. I don't know what the difference is, as they have the same internal resistance and they seem to flow the same rate, but they have different part numbers. I wouldn't mix and match them...

Nor would I mix and match the way Brian's car seems to have been done. All one, or all the other.

I have used Gray, Tan, and Turquoise on my 1.8. All seem to work identically. The gray are the older ones. The car had two grey and two turquoise ones when I bought it. I ordered a new one from my local FLAPS and it was tan. When I pull the plugs they are burning the exact same richness.

Here is a 1.8 fuel injector. Sorry but I don't have the Bosch part number handy.
