Luggage Rack - Yes or No?

I have acquired a luggage rack that is in great shape. I have set it on the back of the car and stared at it for hours. But I have not drilled holes or otherwise attached it.

What do you all think of these? On the one hand it looks pretty cool and kind of adds a bit of "flash" with the chrome. On the other hand it is not original and does break up the "lines" of the classic 914 profile.

What's your vote?

p.s. I think I brought this up before.......but obviously I have not progressed in my decision making.

I would not install it on my car. I think it looks tacky and takes away from the value of the car. It is not a stock item and how often would you really use it? My vote would be NO.

10 years ago I thought they looked crappy...
but now I kinda think they have a classic look now.

Makes me think of a british type sunday driver (which isn't a bad thing).

horn-tooting:
I have a nice one for sale from a race car project if anyone is looking

I think they look good....
You say its not original. Didn't Porsche have an optional one? Izzit the same style? If you would USE IT, put it on. If it is just decorative weight, whats the point. Practical and 914 don't mix well...

They seem to yell "look what I just ordered from the AMCO catalog!"

Maybe if you had the matching front and rear bumper guards...and the red and green jeweled mud flaps.

Chrome curb feelers are always nice.

It was a dealer-installed option (or available from AMCO separately), not a factory option.

I personally don't care for it.

Thumbs down

I hate them, all show and no usefullness.

The PO had one on my car and guess what...that trunk sheetmetal is so thin that any load causes it to permanantly oilcan.

No matter how I tried, that big depression in the trunk wouldn't come out...

Found an ad in the paper with a guy parting out a couple of cars, finally got ahold of him, told him my tale, and arrainged to buy a perfect trunk lid.

After driving across town, the seller presents me with......

another trunk lid with luggage rack holes and a non-fixable depression!!!

So, No from me.

I like a disco ball hanging from the rear view mirror, that gives a lot of "flash" too. Dont use the rack, If you have too much stuff to put in the trunks, then use the family sedan.

And I was going to say I like it....

I have one too, but I have lotsa trunk lids. I planned to have it installed to a spare lid and reinforce the lid to take the weight of a few belongings. This way I can put it on when I need it.

I don't want one on my car! The 914 looks great as is. No additional flash is needed.

I really wish you all would quit beating around the bush and just tell me what you really think......you are all being so vague.

I am going out to the garage tonight to hammer the rack into as flat a chunk as possible to prevent someone in the future from making the horrible mistake I almost did. Oh, and I might just hammer one of my nuts flat too as a sort of punishment.

You could put your boogie board (or snow board) on it.
