Cone set screw removal scheme
 

I wanted to get some opinions about the feasibility of a scheme to remove one of the cone set screws in the shift linkage. The screw at the end of the linkage is stuck in there really good, and the head is starting to strip. Rather than drilling it out and most likely ruining the rear linkage bar, I thought that sacrificing a allen wrench and attempting the JB Weld the wrench into the head, let it set for however long it specifies to totally cure, and try to get a pair of vice grips or something on it to get it out of there. Anyone tried anything similar to this?

SUre, why not. You might try an extractor bit first.

And try heating the cup assembly with a torch, around the set screw...

Skip JB--if you weld the Allen wrench to the set-screw, the heat in combination with the leverage ought to break that sucker loose!!

My only concern with that is that I: a. don't know how to weld; b. have never welded before; c. don't own any welding equipment. :D

I think a combination of heat and an extractor bit will get it out. Don't forget to buy a new one....
