Undercoating??

My tub is pretty much rust-free, but the underside of the car is a gooey, oily, dirty mess. Looks like the bottom of the dumpster beind McDonalds after a dust storm.

I don't really have the means by which to lift the car myself.....anybody had experience taking one somewhere to have it cleaned and coated? Is it worth it? How much would that cost?

Living in salty Ohio, I figure that this certainly could not hurt.

I am currently restoring a 914 and attending the underside of the car as you have questioned. I took a grinder with a wire wheel attached and ground down the entire underside to shiny metal and I am about to coat it with POR-15 (which is a industructable chassy paint that eliminates rust and deadens sound). Grinding the underside down was not a easy job and took alot of time and patients but I think its the only way to do it right. I highly recommend POR-15. Check out the webside! Good Luck!

To clean the underside (or anything dirty, especially engines and tranny), one of the best products I have used is the non-flamible Brake Cleaner mfr by Castle (we go through about 6 cases a week). This stuff is not cheap, but it does clean . Use with caution on painted surfaces. It will eat away at powder coated metal and regular paint.

Another word of caution, once you start cleaning with this stuff, you will be come addicted. Everything will suddenly need to be cleaned.

Make sure you clean in a well-ventilated area... Use fans...
