Engine Serial Number
 

Can anyone identify what this engine serial number means:

EA 034083

It's supposed to be a 2.0 & has 2.0 heat exchangers & muffler but I thought that the 914 2.0 started with GA

Any clarification would be great...................Vern

The EA denotes a 1.7 liter early motor, Maybe european. The book says 1.7.

Actually, it's the later of the two common 1.7 motors. 1972-73 were the years it was used in 914s, possibly some late 71s as well. "W" was the earliest 1.7 used in the 914, and "EB" was the California-only 73 1.7 with low compression and low power.

The motor could still be a 2.0, as you can build any displacement Type IV motor on any Type IV crankcase. If the heads are 2.0 ones, chances are decent that the internals are 2.0 as well. But it's not a guarantee...

This car was quoted as being a rebuilt 2.0

The exhaust & heat exchangers are definetely 2.0 but the heads are not 3 bolt (they have 4 bolts).

Now then, what can I find out about the heads. I have a 1.8 that needs a set of heads and I might use these, if their compatible.

I won the car in a raffle so I can't complain too much. But if this engine was rebuilt 5,000 miles ago, they got ripped! This thing barely runs, it's carburated and every hose on it looks to be 30 years old.

On the bright side: Nice Fuchs, Brand new heat exchanges & bursch exhaust (which says 2.0 on it), new peralon carpet, and a few other items that can transfer over to my daily driver '74 1.8.

On the lousey side: RUST! I wouldn't drive this thing anywhere, my foot can almost goe thru the floor. I guess they thought new carpet would fix it.

All 2 ltr 914 engine have the prefix GA

Well, that is not 100% true. My factory 2.0 liter engine has a prefix of GC. The GA case was only 73 and 74, the 75 and 76 was GC.

We're pretty unlikely to see the GB engines, as they were only used in the European-spec 2.0 cars. But all US-spec 75-76 2.0 914s had GC-code motors. So did the 76 912E.
