It aint stainless, but it is in great condition. I would keep them.

What is the main reason for getting SSIs? They don't rust! What do you see on the surface of the pipes in your picture? I'll give you a hint: 914s are known for this phenomenon.... ;)

The "good" metal on the exchanger/wrapping part is also not the right color for the SSIs that I've seen.

I'll agree with skline, though. They're in very good shape; worth keeping!

Will the 2.0 heat exchangers fit on 1.8 heads. I've heard a lot about 2.0 muffler not fitting 1.8 exchangers but what if I have the whole setup?

Of course they will, what heads are they on now? The advantage is a larger dimension pipe all the way out. If you clean them up nice they will last a long time. You could even take them down and have them ceramic coated. That would make them last forever. I think.

The exchangers that are on that car are 2.0 ones. They don't have a "kick up" near the muffler flange.

You can swap between the 70-74 exhausts as long as you keep the exchangers, muffler, and muffler hanger together. Those must be of the same type--but they can be bolted onto any 914 engine. Or any VW Type IV except for the very last "square port" Bus heads.

You can swap either of the 70-74 exhausts onto a 75-76 914, but you will also need just about all of the heater hardware from the earlier set up.

put a magnet on them and you should be able to tell if they are stainless or not. SS not very magnetic if at all. (depends on what kind of stainless).

My 1.8l looked like they were not stainless untill I go the severe amount of dirt and oil off of them with some steam and a scotch brite pad.

It could be a very dirty SS HE. Can't tell for sure from that pic. Take a piece of Scocth Brite or steel wool and buff a spot on the clam shell part. That way you will know for sure.

OOOhhhh.......a scotch bright pad on stainless or steel leaves very bad scratches!
