Can't find reverse!
 

I have a '73 914 with a 901 sideshift gear box and I'm having a really hard time getting the car to go into reverse. I've tried to adjust it every way that I know but it still acts like reverse isn't even there! I'm pushing down on the shift knob as I move it to the left and then forwards. It feels like it's in reverse but as I let the clutch out the car starts to move forward.
Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

For one thing you don't need to push down. That's what you need to do with a VW not a 914. When puting the car into 1st you should feel the springlike action while you pull the gear shift sideways towards you then down into 1st. The same is felt when puting it in reverse. If you can get it into 1st just push it up into the reverse position. Maybe the trouble is with your pushing down? Try it with out pushing down & good luck.

Here's how to adjust your shifter to compare to what you are doing. Put the tranny in first from under the car. By putting pressure on the passenger side of the lever, bring it over towards the driver's side and connect to shift rod by moving shift rod towrds reverse. Tighten the clamp. Then slip the lever into nuetral and see if it is straight up at the base. Or close, you can vary this a little to personal preferrence. One person can do this and two can do it easier. Should go into first and reverse easily after that. Taken from Red Beard's excellent site. Go to members, look him up and follow the link to his site.

Great. Welcome to the board. Lot of good info here. Tough to use the search button because you can only use a few words in the search, not in order or phrases like Google.
