Doorpost VIN sticker replacement?
OK.
I heard a crazy rumor that one could get a replacement VIN sticker (for the doorpost). First, PLEASE someone tell me that someone makes these custom to your VIN, and second, let me know where to get one of these bad boys.... thanks,

yes you can get them (not sure for all years though). I just bought one for my 80 911. You can only order them from the dealer, they need proof of ownership (like a photocopy of your title and an ID). The order then goes to Porsche in Germany (they are the only ones that CAN do this). You will get a few months later a new sticker (OEM). Mine was around 100 bucks (not cheap).

I had seen AA selling these for limited years, they had no number on them though. The factory used punched digits for the numbers and letters. I dont know how you would actually put the number on it.

the ones you get from the dealer are from porsche..so you get the punched vin and year/mo of manufacture...they obviously use the OEM labels so you can't tell it's not original (except they look darn new!).

Is there a way to remove the sticker. The PO masked it off and painted around it. It has the paint higher and rough around the edges. Id like to sand the area down, repaint original color and have the look of the sticker pasted to the surface.

No matter how carefully the masking is done, you will always be able to tell it has been painted around. I would prefer to see no label than a masked label. The same holds true for the paint code plate. Being the rivets are NLA. The vin decal is one of the first areas I will check to see if the car was resprayed. Its also a fast way to see if there was a color change. The original color shows through the perferations.
I would defenitely try Porsche or DVM. Maybe apply a heat gun on the label and see if that will work. Then you can reapply it. Im not sure how fragile it is. |

It's too fragile for that.
It's unusable if removed, some of it flakes, the rest separates, and tears. M
