Does anyone know of an easy way to remove the windshield.

Besides the actual glass, I need to remove the trim, which is in greas shape & I want to keep it that way.

Good luck it is ez to bend. The new trim supplied from porsche is bent up before you even get it. So dont think you going to get New that is in perfect condition cause it is not. Steve

Just very carefully pry out the trim with a flat blade screwdriver. It's held on by plastic clips. Remove the corners and center pieces first. You can get the glass out by threading a piece of piano wire (some folks use guitar string) through the sealant, then wrap each end around something for a handle and pull it all the way around until the old sealant is cut though. Get somebody to help you lift out the glass.

As for that other guy - well, what was I expecting...

If it is factory glass, I have removed several, first off, be really careful and do not try to do it alone, the glass is old and brittle and will crack in half if you do not lift it out from both sides evenly. But as they said, very carefully remove the trim all around the glass. Then with a person on each side, reach inside the car and push the glass out with one hand and grab it on the outside with the other hand. It will lift right out without resistance as the factory sealant is now hard from age and does not seal to the glass anymore. I have removed abot 8 windsheilds from cars and if it was factory glass, it came right out. Aftermarket glass however, has fresh sealant and is stuck like glue, then you will need to do the piano wire thing to get it out. You can tell if it is factory glass, it will have a VW logo down on one corner of the glass.

Speaking of window trim, mines in sad shape. I'd like to replace it with a window seal similar to the "cal look" bug window seal. Has that been done before??? Is there a aftermarket source?

Putty knife to remove the trim. Guitar string or picture wire to remove the butyl seal. and then a BFH once you accidentally crack it like I did!

As far as the aftermarket seals... search the archives. I think there is a cerntain Honda (del Sol?) and you can use a rubber windshield mount from it and I think the other option is a Ford Astrovan... not sure.

Check with some of the specialty glass shops, they might know what would work on that.

Took mine out for the resto...sat in my bedroom for a year (side note: wife not thrilled) ... Cracked two seconds after reinstaling....good luck....

use teh sun or a heat gun to soften teh butyl. Do not try it cold. I use a #6 nylon guitar string. Using a metal wire, it takes patients not to crack teh window. glass must be completely free from teh butyl before trying to push on it. If you chip the edge, this area will be stressed and easy to induce a crack if the glass is flexed. if you chip it , even a super small crack must be smoothed out, sanded round before re-installation. I hopr this helps.

You might get lucky like I did.

Once i got the trim off the old seal had broken and the glass just lifted out. It wasnt a butyl seal though, looked more like hot glue.

Surprised the glass wasnt broken, just being held in by the trim.
