Question Sun visors

Had to drive eastbound at about 8AM, and the lack of sun visors was suddenly a major issue! Cost of new visors on Pelican is astounding...any tips on what other kinds of sun visors will fit? Thanks.

visors

I have a pair of Vinal Spec. visors on my 914, just set a pair of ratty old ones to them, in less the two wk. they had a set back.
The only problem ,(if you consider this a problem) is they can't duplicate the pocket on the driver side, and the vanity mirror and flap on the passenger side. But I'll give up those to have a set of plump visors. Mine were $69.00. Dave

I took a fairly ratty pair of original 914 visors and "fixed" them.

I cut slits in one of the edges of the visors. I then had two flat boards with spacers in the corners of them at about 3/8 inch. I then shot a little of the expanding insulation foam inside the slots in the vinyl and pressed the two boards on each side of the visor with clamps. The slits also allowed for any extra foam to escape and be cut off later.

Once the foam dried, I released the boards, and bingo....a working visor. Not perfect, but pretty darn good. And quite functional.

If anyone wants better details and/or some pictures, let me know and I can post them.

visors

Potter: I ask the same ques. last yr. before I got the ones from Vinal Spec. Some one on this board did what you did a few yrs. before. He said after a couple of yrs. the foam began to degrade from the sun. I was thinking of doing that ,but his experience changed my mind. I hope he chimes in . Dave

The second best thing you can do for visors, is buy a set of nice Oakley's that are polarized, and remove the visors.

The view improves 80%.

One of the reasons I have a 914 is I like the sun, it is my friend. I find that the visors get in my way and have no use for them. I have several sets laying around in my garage and a set in my Chalon I will be removing. They interfere with the top removal and installation. I just wear dark sunglasses like Miles said.

Hi Dave......yea, I vaguely remember that thread of discussion. But I doubt very much that this foam would break down. I have used the foam (called GREAT STUFF) on exterior projects subject to sun and rain that are still going strong after years and years. I even used it on my boat and its still good as new after 8 years. Maybe I have just been lucky..........there is a first for everything!

I had mine done at a local upolstery shop for less than $40 bucks each. Very Freekin nice work too... Just took them some old ratty 914 visors and they handed back brand new ones that fit perfectly. No pocket or mirror, but I never used them anyways. These are guarenteed for the life of the car not to blowfish!

Call around and you may be surprised,
