Speedo Not Working

The speedo on my 914 isn't working. The cable plugs into the side of the transmission, correct? Then it runs through the center tunnel, and up into the back of the speedo.

So, what is prone to go bad first? I heard that it is usually the cable, but am weary of the persons opinion that I heard it from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.

An easy way to test the speedo and cable is to unhook it from the transmission and carefully put the inner cable in a drill chuck. At normal drill speed I think it reads about 60MPH or so. If no speed registers then unhook it at the back of the speedo and retest. This will show if it the cable or speedo. Good luck

Sounds good. I will do. Thanks.

The gear drivey thing breaks-

My experience has been that the gear drive that sticks off the tranny and runs the speedo cable breaks. On mine the housing itself had broken, and it was epoxyed and wrapped in wire (as a splint sorta). I'm pretty sure you can still get 'em. I bet PP has 'em, but I haven't checked. Its an easy removal/ attachment to put on the new one.

You can check the right angle drive on the tranny by removing the cable, jacking the rear wheels, and rotating them. The slot thingy in the drive should rotate with the wheels, tho not necessarily at the same ratio.

If you have a helper, disconnect the cable at the speedo and at the tranny, then try to rotate one end of the cable and have your helper hold the other end still. If you can rotate your end in either direction, you need a new cable.

If both of these tests "pass", then the speedo itself is toast.
