Inspection passing questions
If the bumpers were backdated on a 76, would that create an inspection passing problem? Also, if the FI is removed on a 71, would that create an inspection passing problem? I'll take what anyone knows for any state, but since i live in NJ, info for this state would be particularily useful.

chris, do not know much about new jersey stuff but bumpers i don't think make a difference fi though would depend how stringent your inspection stuff is. i have a 71 and am in colorado got mine emission tested with carbs because that was what the po put on. did not have a problem here because the machines they use here are about 6 or 7 years behind emission machine of california. also depends on the tech doing the inspection. how smart is he about 914's best thing to do is call inspection people and get list of what they check for and doesn't new jersey have like collector plates seems as if that would be a little easier to pass. any how hope it helps

When I lived in Utah, they have very strict inspection rules. The bumpers however were not a big issue. As long as your vehicle had them and they werent badly damaged or bent where they hooked to the body, then you were ok. But you did need to make sure that they withstood pressure, as the inspectors would use their body weight on the bumpers to test the shock bounce (had to be within a certain amount of inches movemet). (rolling eyes).

Hi Chris,
You should'nt have to worry about the bumpers, the inspection person wouln't know if the bumpers were backdated or not, they just check if you have bumpers. As for the emmissions when I had my 70 Mustang it didn't need emmisions testing if over 25 years old. Were in NJ do you live? Pat- |
Thanks for the info everyone. I feel that most of the inspection people I have dealt with wouldn't know carburation for FI so as long as I passes the sniff test requirements for the year 914 I have I should be okay. But I wasn't sure. Pat, I'm located in Union county, in Westfield, about 20 minutes west of Newark Airport. How about you?

Hi Chris, I'm in Passaic Countyon the border of Orange County NY, a block in from Greenwood Lake.

The sniff is not done at idle. They put the car on a roller type treadmill and put the car in gear to simulate it at speed. So, your rpm's will be about 4k or so.
