Brake Pads
Just wondering what kind of brake pads you guys use on your cars. I have converted my car ('69 Beetle) to disk brakes using the same pads as the stock 914 calipers (D31's). The weight of my car is heavily biased towards the rear - I figure about 67% towards the rear, so front end loading isn't very high.
Will using semi-metallic pads as opposed to organic pads make a big difference in braking performance? I know semi-metallic is superior for stop-n-go and at the track - but most of my driving is highway miles. Do I need the extra heat capacity of the metallic lining. Do semi-metallic linings have a higher friction coefficient than organic linings? What kind of difference can I expect? Any particular brand? I can get Ferodo and Bendix from work in both organic and semi-metallic linings. I know this really isn't 914 related, but figured the racers would have some good answers... TIA |

I use Metal Masters on both 914s and our 1987 Turbo. No noise, fairly clean, heat doesn't affect them and easy on the rotors. Oh yea, nice price too.

I would have thought those were 'racing only' pads and not suitable for the street - maybe I should re-consider. Do you use them purely on the street or do you autocross as well? Do they make a noticeable difference in braking distance or control?

One set is on my daughter's daily driver 914 which is autocrossed a couple times a month. The other 914 is a race only car that is raced several times a month and the last set is on our Turbo which is street mostly, maybe one or two autocrosses per year. I did a time trial (continuous laps)in the turbo a couple of years ago and they worked fine with no fade of damage.

I installed Metal Masters all around about a month ago. Also used anti-squeal pads from PP. Very happy with results. Remember, you must adjust rear venting clearance carefully and bleed, bleed, bleed, and bleed again.

If you use the Ferodo pads, you can tell people that you have the same brand of brake pads on your car that the Lemans winning 914 used.
