Well, here goes.
My rear brakes are stock. My front are as follows. 1) Mid 70's 911 rotor's; Vented. 2) Standard (I think) 1971 914 front calipers with spacers to widen them. Right Front Caliper Markings: Cast into the Outside - ATC 45R Stamped onto inside - 431, G-59 Left Front Caliper Markings: Cast into the Outside - ATC 50R Stamped onto inside - 431, G-13, S Each Caliper has just one piston a side. The front rotors look like this: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1974-75/6-1.JPG My big current problem: No braking from the rear. I just realized they dont self adjust; or do they? In the rain, only my right front brake works (on the highway) and thats after pushing down real hard and trying to shed some water. I already spun out ( 2-360's) doing 65 the other day in the rain because my brakes didnt work, and then , when they did, only the right started working which caused the lockup and the spin. It seems to me that the rotors somehow get totally water logged and at highway speeds, the water gets centrifugally trapped into the rotor somehow. I am running wheel spacers on the 911 front rotors with early cookie cutter wheels. Any body have any ideas on why the fronts are getting totally water logged? Even if I get the rears working again, they will just lock up in the rain because the fronts wont work. In the dry, both fronts work fine; more or less. I am looking to upgrading the master cylinder to the 19mm unit ( i think its a stock one in there). Anybody have any overall reccomendations for this setup? 1) Type of pads. 2) Should I change to 320i calipers for the vented rotors. Thanks again all. |

The rears have to be adjusted. From the inside look for a hole in and through the trailing arm. In the caliper there is supposed to be a plug. After you take the plug out ( some I've seen don'have the plug anymore) there is a hex adjuster(6mm?) if it hasn't fallen out. That one does the inside piston. There is a slotted stud with a lock nut for the outer piston. Use a .006th blade between rotor and pad. As far as the fronts I think the 19mm master cyl is supposed to be used for the 911 upgrade. If you have the 911 upgrade for the 914 you already the hot setup for a 914. The 320i calipers are for non vented rotors (unless you can space them.... bad idea.) The water problems? assuming your front brakes are in tip top shape look for something channeling the water in. I supect you have other problems that show up more in the wet.
