914 California smog exempt
There is a 75 914 2.0L on ebay which the owner says he has a DMV exemption for smog compliance because the smog pump braket is no longer available...hmmmm Can this be true?
"Sorry about the lack of information on the car. It has a 2.0 and standard equipment. As for the smog exemption, I have a certificate from the DMV saying it is exempt because the bracket for the smog pump is no longer available. The car never has to be smogged again in the state of California. It could happen, but the current owner would have to jump through large hoops to get it. Also the hoops need to be jumped through each and every time the smog comes up... "I" would run away....

I would be vary wary about buying a 914 on E-bay, I have seen lots sell on ebay, but....
For one thing once you bid you are under contract to buy the car, now it does not take a rocket scientist to know that you definitely NEVER EVER buy a 914 without looking at it in person and in great detail. The only way I see is if you could make arrangements to see the car in person before bidding on it. Just my thoughts on being careful what you blow a couple grand on! -Brent [This message has been edited by 7391417 (edited 01-18-2000).] |

Here is what I think they guy on Ebay is really saying (although Mikez is the expert here).
When I went to get my 2.7 914-6 conv smogged, all their books were wrong, and they said that I needed a thermostatic air cleaner. Well, knowing well enough that there was no TAC on the 1974 CIS motors, I called their parts locator hotline, and 'tried' to obtain one. Basically, they give you the name of three smog-parts houses, and if all 3 don't have the part, then you will get an exemption from smogging your car for that particular year. You need to do this again everytime that you smog the car. It's not unfeasible that the three places would not have the bracket, as these are getting hard to find. Also, this exemption doesn't exempt you from tailpipe and smog tests. It only exempts you from not having that piece of equipment. I believe that you can still be classified as a gross polluter. |

Ummm, Wayne is right. But you have to go through the same song and dance every time you want an exemption. Meaning, every year because you are now in the same catagory as a gross polluter. For a 75 model, that means every year until 2005.
Right now I am trying to register a 74. Everything is there, it passes smog, DMV has a record of it being a local car. BUT the DMV does not run the smog check program. The Bureau of Automotive Repair(BAR) does. Their records do not talk to DMV's and everytime I take it to the smog shop the computer has no record of the VIN #. So because of BAR's crappy computer and the relocation of the BAR's office I have had to wait two weeks to get an appointment with the smog referee. You can't call the ref direct, because he has no public telephone. The moral of the story is....avoid smog hassles like the plague....I know the ins and outs and I still got hosed.... Just my $.02. |

For all this crap with smog, I am a firm believer in it. The air is getting so much cleaner here in LA. What becomes a hassle for us classic car owners, really snags the people who are truly gross polluters.
It's a hassle, but one of the hassles from the government that I can't get too upset about. I think I'll go hug a tree now. -Wayne |

back in the 60s I remember coughing up a lung after playing in the school yard...that does not happen any more...both the playing and the lung thing...
BTW, got the car smogged, it passed with flying colors, needed to modify the idle screw....could not get it to go under 1100 rpms. The computer software on the smog check machine would not accept that high of an idle... Hugging trees gives you splinters, Wayne...plus they just ignore you and will pollenate with someone else when you are not around....try someone in your own species...8^) [This message has been edited by mikez (edited 01-29-2000).] |
