stock oil cooler spacers

My manual mentions an oil cooler spacer ring for the stock cooler
, to keep the gaskets from squeezing too much. how thick are these supposed to be? would a regular metric flat washer be about right?

I'm aiming for a leak free engine as my New Years Resolution

There are NO spacers between the cooler and the case on a type 4 motor. The Haynes book is wrong.
