Yes. But don't forget the exhaust and ignition system. The combination can gain around 30 hp.

You will also need the proper cam. Don't go to big with the carbs. 40 mm is more than enough.

Just throwing on carbs will not make a difference. As TMK said, you need to do a botom end modification before you will notice ANY difference.

There is TONS of posts on the subject. Check the archives on the 914 Renegade site, click on Forum... www.dgi.net/914 ... and the www.rennlist.org ... site. If you can't find them let me know....

A stock motor with a properly working FI will give more horse power in a usable range than the same motor with carbs.

Replacing a fouled FI with a properly set up carb, extractor exhaust, and proper timing, may give some power but it will most likely be a trade off. A loss of low end torque with a gain in higher RPM horsepower.

A 2.0L with duel carbs, a high performance carb only cam, headers, ignition will maybe give 20 horsepower.

IMHO:

If you have a stock motor, fix the FI...Unless the parts needed (important to find out what EXACTLY is wrong, many people fall into the trap of replacing parts they THINK are bad, a few hundred dollars later they have the same problem, curse FI and buy carbs) cost more than a carbs set-up, after tuning that comes to $500-$700.

If you are rebuilding the motor (i.e. the case is split and you are replaceing the cam) and emissions aren't a concern then there is some power to be gained by carbs, cam, exhaust, and larger displacement.

There is no free lunch, more hosepower means lower MPG, harder running cold, and a lower engine life.

just my .02 but then again I'm not try to sell you anything (like a nice new shiny set of carbs)
