Volkswagen Bus Engine (1700cc) Will it fit?

I have a 1972 Volkswagen Transpoorter with a 1700 cc engine in it. I have heard that the 914 4 cylender engine is ver much the same as the Vw engine. My question is can i put my engine into a 914?

Yes and No. the oil dipstick is in the wrong location, the fan will not have timming marks on it that you can read thur the hole in the fan shroud, The flywheel needs to be swapped for a 901 style. Steve

with enough money, any engine can be put into a 914, but that's probably not really your question. some major differences between bus and 914 engines include the oil level dip stick (914's go straight up, buses go horizontally out the back) the manner in which oil is added (914's have an oil fill on top of the engine, buses sometimes have a tube that connects to the bottom rear of the case and the tube is accessed from the rear). late (80-83) air cooled vanagons have a different exhaust sealing surface on the head than earlier buses and 914s. i bet it costs just as much to rebuild a bus engine as it does to rebuild a 914 engine. search other sites particularily shoptalkforums, 914club among others as this topic occurs frequently.

and no, i don't think you need to do any welding if you have the correct parts.

Porsche Crest I Should Know

Oh yeah, it'll fit.

I currently have a bus motor in my car. Truth be told, it's a bus case with 914 heads, stock 1.7 FI. etc. When I got the motor (lovingly ripped out of one of Redbeard's Iron Oxide Conversion experiments) it took me a bit to figure it out. It warnt exactly right. Whover had rebuilt or rebastardized the thing had covered the bus dipstick location with a plate and moved the stick to the top of the motor. They put a copper tube where the location of a normal 914 dipstick would be, but the tube is slightly too large a diameter for a dipstick the seat properly. They also used the original bus dipstick, which is about 2 inches shorter than the 914 stick. It wouldn't even touch the oil level! If you filled it to the level indicated, the car was waaayy overfilled.

I suspect that it still has the bus cam, as the car seems a bit underpowered compared to my old motor. The power difference between the bus motor and the Porsche version is mostly a function of the cam and the fuel injection. The rest of the thing is identical.

If I had to guess, I would say that I have lost about 5 hp due to the bus cam (the stock 914 FI is esential to making the thing behave properly. A bus makes all its torque much lower on the RPM curve.) I make up for it on the track by keeping the throttle nailed to the floorboard.

Short answer: it'll fit. Once you move the dipstick, it's a straight bolt in operation. All the tin and other paraphernalia should just screw right to it.

BAP-Geon rebuild. It was a kind of Universal case that could be fitted to a 914 or a Bus. LC pistons and FI cam . They came with 914 dipsticks. Steve
