Welding without harming electrical system

Hey guys,

Looking for some experienced help. I would like to do a little stiffening work to my '73. I don't plan on taking the car apart. What should I disconnect electrically in order to avoid damaging the electrical system during welding? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Disconnect the Battery Leads. I wrap them in a shop rag so they dont touch metal.Steve

That's probably all you need to do--disconnect both + and - battery terminals. (Always disconnect the ground strap first, and reconnect it last!!) I also unplugged the ECU when a buddy did some welding on my car. I think I was feeling a little paranoid that day...

Try to keep your ground lead as close to your work as possible and make sure you have real good contact. I don't know about the sensitive stuff, but if I had MSD, or any of that, I'd unplug it. In other words, I'm in agreement with Dave.

Disconnect battery and remove (I'm just paranoid of battery gases and welding sparks) Disconnect any CD box, stereo amplifier or anything that is voltage sensitive, and start welding away!

Make sure your welding surfaces are clean, clean clean. Ground your welder as close as possble (forget this step of you are gas welding)

Was installing rear sway bars and forgot to unplug the ECU:eek: After the first arc something (a little bird) said UNPLUG THE ECU! I thought I really messed up but got lucky... nothing was harmed. I try to keep my head outta my arse & think ahead just so I don't "create" work on the teener:rolleyes: I may not be so lucky the next timeSmileWavy
