Oil pump issues.....
during the last Phoenix AX, I lost oil pressure. After tearing things down to find the issue, I discovered that the tab on the oil pump shaft was not mating with the slot in the cam gear. The shaft was definately too short. There is no wear on the top of the shaft.
The motor is a fresh top end and I re-sealed the oil pump when I did that. I don't recall if the tab was 'taller' then or not. I have another oil pump (same part #), and it's shaft is at least 1/8" taller than the one in my engine. Closer inspection reveals that the shafts are different lengths. It appears that the gear is press fit on the shaft. So, my questions are: - Did something move the cam and this is just a sign? - Did the shaft on the failed pump simply move? - Why do I keep working on my own car ![]()

If you had oil pressure and then lost it, I'd look at the cam thru the lifter holes.

what gaskets did you use under the pump body to the case? If memory serves. there should only be a very thing paper gasket with no RTV stuff... is there signs of wear on the tab as in metal removed from the slot in the cam gear hitting the tab?

There was a little bit of wear on the cam gear, but little to none on the tab. The tab has a small bevel at the top that is still present.

I just thought I'd attach photo evidence of the two pump shafts....
