you need a "triple square" 8mm (maybe 6mm). if you're lucky, you need an allen

Thanks,
I'm confident an allen won't do for me.

You might get one kind in the kit (8mm triple square) and have another on the car (6mm allen). Best to have both on hand.

$27 is a little expensive for the triple square tool. I'm sure it's nice but you can get a similar tool at the vw parts shop for $6.

To remove the CV shafts from the car, obviously, remove the 8mm bolts that connect the inner CV joint to the tranny drive flange. As stated earlier, use the 12 point 8mm allen or the some have just the 6 point allen. Be sure to clean out any dirt/grease inside of the allen bolts. A pick and brake cleaner works great.

Once the CVs are loose from the tranny, use a 30mm socket to remove the nut inside of the wheel hub. It may be necessary to use a large breaker bar. Sometimes 3/4" stuff is needed. Once the nut is removed, then pull the CV shaft out. Place CV into soft jaw vice and seperate the outboard CV from the stub axle.

After the CVs are out, inspect the CV bolts. Replace as needed using 12.9 metric fastners. Also, install new CV gaskets to keep the grease inside of the CVs

i found one at NAPA for about 4 bucks. also, when you get new cv bolts, they will most likely be allen.
