Cool NFS: Porsche Unleashed

Anyone out there playing Need For Speed?

I'm curious to know what your best times are for the "Rally of Europe".
Sor far I've gotten down to 24:15 total time for all 9 stages with my '00 Turbo. I'm about to switch to my '95 Turbo and try to beat that.

Are you using a keyboard or steering wheel?

I'm using the keyboard, but I reconfigured the controls. I moved the parking brake to the Ins key to get it out of the way (it is only necessary in the Factory Driver mode. I moved the brakes to the Spacebar so I can "Left Hand" brake.

The first race takes over 5 minutes to complete in a 356, but less than 2 1/2 minutes in a modern 911.

The Rally of Europe isn't available until the Modern Era, after completing most of the Evolution Mode. Once the three eras are complete you get to freelance around Europe with any car you own.

No one else playing with this game?

Its the only racing game I've seen that comes with a 914, and you can drive on some very exciting roads in Europe. Its a great way to practice high speed driving during winter. Hell, it even snows in the Alps as you drive down the mountain.

Yep. I recently found a link (I thought it was here but maybe it was another board) to a 914/6 but I have not downloaded it yet.

Anyone familiar with the Racer sim? It's free, has a whole bunch of cars (including a 914 2.0) and tracks (LeMans, Nurburgring, LimeRock AX, etc). I understand you can configure your own car, and perhaps your own track.

Must have been invented by someone who lives where it snows a few months of the year!

Check it out here:

Chris,

I play NFS PU, I LOVE it. I meant to turn on my computer and see if I can find out what my time on that tour is. I'll try and remember tonight, to compare notes. It's been a while since I've driven it I have all the cars that come from EA, I love the Moby Dick car...when that boost kicks in...watch out

Nathan

PS: I also have a 914 3.6 tubo car...sweeet!

Played the game for quite a while. Linked 3 computers so we could play against each other.

Downloaded the 914/6 2.0, V8, 2.4, etc.... - couldn't get them to run correctly (damn 'puters).

Gave up - now doing Project Gotham and MotoGP - what a switch!

I played it all the time until I upgraded my puter. Since installing a different motherboard and XP pro I cant play any more.
This MB only sees 256 megs of ram no matter how much I load, and that just isn't enough. I've tried everything I can think of but the MB always says I only have 256 mb ram.
I bought a new CPU/MB (AMD athlon 1.3mhz) on e-bay but it showed up DOA and I had to send it back. I'm goin nuts, I have a new steering wheel/pedal assy I want to try out. At one time I had a 959 and over $1mil in the bank (in the game, not in real life )
who says cheaters never proser?

I have the game an love it but I had to delete it from my computer. I was having problems with the screen freezing up 3/4 through a race. Super frustrating!!! It just does not like XP. Now the new F1 game I got works perfect even with the steering wheel and pedals. Too bad I can't get a 914 for that game

John,
I think I'll check that out, thanks.

Nathan,
The game doesn't record the cumulative time. It's only available when you finish the rally.
A few weeks ago I decided to see which was the best car ('95 Turbo, '99 C4, '00 Turbo). The Rally of Europe seemed like the most comprehensive way of finding out what I wanted. So far I have run the rally 29 times. The '95 Turbo has awesome raw power, the C4 is easy to drive and sounds the best IMO, the '00 Turbo is more refined but every bit as fast as the '95. If I don't like a run because of damage or a poor start or any reason, I abort the run and restart a stage. Its a good thing the payoff is a cool million, or I would be out of money from entry fees and damage repair. Actually my bank account is around 18 million.
I actually won the GT1 race at the end of the Modern Era once.
How does the 914-6 turbo stack up against the modern cars?

sammyg2,
I would like the 959 and 928, but I dont think EA supports the game any more. If anyone can help me get these cars, or a 914-6 Turbo for that matter I would appreciate it.

DSPTurtle,
I have problems with the screen not keeping up with my car sometimes too, and my computer crashes on occasion.

A year ago I went through the factory driver mode, and was able to get a GT1 through the tricky course the game has for a final test, including spinning it around between the cones and driving backwards, then spinning it around forward again. It takes deft finger control and P brake application.

Chris...I guess I'll have to run it again some time. That'll give me a reason to procrastinate more on sanding my rims, haha. The 914/6 turbo kills everything out there (I set it up w/ slicks racing suspension and brakes). There are some sites out there w/ other cars, just do a google search or something. The sites change now and then, I think some of my cars came off of ones that aren't around anymore (you also need to hack in to fix bugs in some of them )
I love the gift cars for winning the driving tests 550, USA 2.7 RS, moby dick, GT1 and USA 996 Turbo. Cool

I just wanted to mention that XP has something called Application Compatibility that may help with problems with XP. It's not a cureall, but may be worth a try if you haven't done it yet.

I gave up on the computer version games cause they always crashed the 'puter. I went to PlayStation for gaming and leave the business on the 'puter... safer that way!

Tonight I downloaded the Racer game mentioned previously, as well as the 914. It looks absolutely great!

I was getting between 30 and 50 fps on my P-II/450 (albeit with a nice ATI Radeon 8500)

I might have to try the "arcade" version of the car; it is very difficult to make it around a track at anything over 30 MPH.

I am looking forward to the further development of this game!

I took the great car made for the game by Justin Martin and edited the .TGA file to make it into my '76.

The original design by Justin:

Even got my face in it!

I don't have any 3D programs, so I'm a bit limited on what I can do. I'd like to resize the steering wheel so the wheel pic I imported in is more easily seen. Also, the early fog lights are still coming through, apparently as a 3D object.

But it's certainly a challenge to drive, as well as play with. All in all a great piece of software so far!

For all of you having problems with NFS:PU and Win XP, you should try to update your drivers (especially your motherboard drivers) if you haven't already. It seems anything with an Athlon is going to crash right off the bat. The Intel chips (and therefore motherboards they reside on) are a little more stable. But they'll crash eventually too. It's actually the VIA chipset that is running the bus on the MB. Do a search on any search engine and you shoudl be able to find the drivers.

As far as my best time on Rally of Europe, I'm not sure. I was crushing the competition. At one point I had at least two fo every car and more than $35 million bucks. I...lead...a...sad...life.
