914 consistenly starting every-other-time
A few weeks ago my car wouldn't turn over when I tried to leave school. So I push start it and it fires right up and I drive home. I get home and turn the car off, then...I try to restart it and it doesn't turn over. So, I thought it might be my alternator or connection on my battery. The next morning before I went to school I turn it over and it starts right up....I drive to the gas station and turn it off...then it wont start again.....this goes on for a few days of starting every other time. I read the tech article on '914 starting problems' and it says to check the ground strap on the tranny. I check the ground strap and clean it well and the car started right up and I thought I fixed the problem because it worked for the next 3 days as it started every time. But, a few days ago it began to do the same thing of starting/not starting. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this...possibly my starter? I dont think its my alternator and my battery is fairly new. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Try 'ignition switch'.

Do you suggest I replace my ignition switch? I checked the pelican parts catalog and I couldn't see a part by that name? Do they still make and sell these?

Yes, they do.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_electr_pg5.htm#item25 Next time it fails, try tapping on the starter. Sometimes they stick. If that doesn't work, try pushing the car backwards a foot or two while in gear. That can sometimes move things to a fresh position where they work. There are quite a few other checks in the article, go through them when you get a chance. --DD |
