Splitting the case

Ok, I have been trying to split the case on my 1.8L type IV but it doesn't want to budge. I have followed the instructions in the Haynes manual as well as other information I have found online, but still no joy. I have removed all 24 nuts ( I counted them ) though the through bolts all catch about halfway out when I try to remove them, I don't know if this is normal. All the instructions say it should separate fairly easily with a little tapping, but as I said before, it doesn't budge. Am I missing something? Are there any tricks to get the separation started?

Thanks,
Derek

Almost always, the reason that someone cannot separate their Type IV case is that they missed a bolt or two. I forget how many there are, but there are several that just love to hide!!

Check behind the flywheel. There's at least one that gets covered up by it. Check right around the oil pump and the bore for the fan hub. Check in among the lifter bores. And so on...

Yeah, I have heard people usually miss a couple, which is why i searched for a few days before i posted this. There are 24 total and I found the last two last night. I will look for some more, but I am pretty sure I have gotten them all (based solely on the fact that all the documentation I have seen says there are 24 and i count 24 removed).

Ok, I split the case :D I guess it just needed a little more coaxing. One think that I think may have made it harder to split is that I just had it sitting on a table. when I finally got it to split, I had proped it up so not much was touching the table.

Good job. When you have all 24 nuts off, it's gotta open. There are a couple of safe places to hit with a plastic hammer, little but beefy tabs at the parting line.

I'll bet one of the last two nuts was down in between the lifter bores. We all miss those at first.

Do you have my video? If you do it is almost impossible not to split it on the first try.

Jake? How much is your video??
