Steering wheel upgrade problem

OK heres the deal: I have a 72 914 (built 10/71) I bought a used dino steering wheel and adapter form an auction site. After spending hours to restore the spokes and hand stitch the leather wrap, the adapter does not fit. The splines are the right size, but the adapter bottoms out on the column about 1/2 inch too soon. I noticed on the original wheel for my car, the splines are deeper in the steering wheel hub. I guess I am not sure what adapter to buy now. The previous owner of the Dino wheel said it was from a 74. I wonder if my car still has the 70-71 style steering column, which is hard to find an adapter for.
thanks
Mark

5 By? 100mm ?

I'm guessing, but a grant hub would probably do the trick... measure the wheel, and then go to a FLAPS and measure the hub there... most pepboys sell Grant.... they may not have the right one, but you will know if the bolt pattern is the same.

5X 3in diam. so it must be 75mm

I guess I am wondering if my coulmn is a 71 and earlier style or a 72 and later style. Everything else on the car trns out to be a pre 72 style

cut the adapter down .5 inch. i sold someone the same style adapter, and this is what they had to do. it apparently worked great!

The adapter needs to move .78 inch. If I cut that much off I will only have 5mm of spline left on my adapter.

This might help you.
