Upgrading my Alternator
 

Is there an alternative to the low amperage alternator currently nestled in my engine bay? Can I use a 911 alt.? Or how about an internally regulated alt.? I don't really care about the parasitic drag created by the larger alternator, so what are my options? Thank you in advance.

I thought I read that you can use one from a 1976 912E for an output of 75 amps.

The 1976 912E, produced for one model year only, used the same Type 4 2.0L engine as the 75-76 914, but with L-Jetronic FI instead of D-Jet.

So, the alternator ***should*** be a physical match.

Look for a local alt/starter rebuild place. They can re-wind your alt for more amps. Also look at the Type 4 buses, the Wesfalia was a camper van and had all kinds of electrical accesories. Ask the FLAPS if the bus alt will work I'm pretty sure they have more amps to them. The big thing is if the plug is the same.

Also check out Kymco Motorsports in the VW mags. They "build" an alternator they call the "Super 75" or something like that. Basically they take apart fresh Bosch units and rebuild them for higher output. They make a Type I and a Type IV version.
