Loss of Power?
Hi everyone I have a 74 with a carbed 1.8 with Weber 34ICTs. The other day I drove about 20 hwy miles & exited a I felt a sudden loss of power but then it just went away. But now it's back, it wouldn't idle until I adjusted the carbs so that it would. The carbs sound ok but when I go to drive it I still don't have any power. Any ideas?

Check for a clogged fuel filter(s), including the ones that reside inside the carbs.
Your fuel pump might also be going on the fritz. Sometimes they just "go", other times they putter out gradually with loss of pressure. That, along with carbs that might be due for a rebuild (you did say you had to re-adjust them), could be compounding the problem. There are SO many variables; this is just "first check" recommendations. Good luck! |

Did you have to raise the idle? If so I'd check the distributor first, if you have a 009 they can have the advance weights rust in the "retard" position and not move or move erratically. The 4 little holes in the bottom of the distrib body seems to let a lot of moisture/water in? Good luck.

I know this is a long shot, but thought id add it anyway. I used to own a Bug and was driving once when i shifted, and lost most of my power. It started popping and backfiring. Turned out to be a broken push rod. But looking at the Type 4 pushrods compared to the type 1, its hard to believe they'd break too.
A wise man once told me that 99% of the time it isnt the carbs. Check electrical first then fuel. Sometimes the plug wires slide out or get dirty. I think the above fuel system check ideas sound good too. |
