More on Tires
Ok, now that we are on a tire kick, and Im buying new ones today, I need to ask some questions Im still not clear on.
I have stock rims. Can I put a 5.5" width tire on them, or do I need to keep a 5"? I would really like to keep my 1/4 panels correct (i.e. stock, no rolling them out). Can I put on a 205/60/14 tire? Or do I need a 205/50/14. What about a 195/60/14? What is a good brand of tire thats cheep, what do you think about Goodyear, BF Goodrich, Kelly, the list goes on. Thanks |

I'm running cooper cobra tires, they're pretty good. they were $240 plus tax and included mounting and balancing. the tires i have are 195-60-14 and the passenger side rear one is rubbing ever so slightly. i also don't have stock wheels, i think mine are offset out a little more than stock. there is a pic of a wheel on the site Jeff put up for me for my turbo stuff. the guys at AA told me the set was worthless, that it was some aftermarket bug thing.

First you need to decide if you want to keep the same diameter, this is important, by changing the diameter of the tire you are changing the gearing characteristics of the car. A smaller tire gives you a little better acceleration and a taller tire will drop the RPM's while you are on the freeway (a taller tire will also be a slower off the line due to torque multiplication or lack of compared to the smaller tire)
Any decent tire shop will test mount a few different sizes to ensure that you will be happy. I've been happy with Comp T/A's myself for an all around tire ------------------ Mike Mueller Antioch, CA 1970 1.8 |
