40IDF air filter ass'y?

I know, I'm in a full-of-questions-mode, sorry!
I've got a set of 40IDF's, and would like to get a new cleaner set - what does everyone run, which setup flows best, etc? Also, what about velocity stacks for them, and would they be worth it on a 2056? (I've got short manifolds as well)
My current setup is K&N, however it's the short rectangular style, only about 2 inches tall. I can't imagine a small filter like that flowing very well, and have seen those tall (4 inch?) oval sets for sale, and would guess they would be best? I've also seen a pic or two of a wrap-around foam deal as well - who makes that one, as I can' t seem to find it in any searches.
I've found the K&N ovals for $55-60 bucks at various places, but the housings look kinda cheap - like stamped tin, and my current ones are schmancy, milled alyu-mineeum, and are quite sharp looking. Ooo, now I'm thinking, can I just get a taller element for my old ones?
Thanks y'all
Jeff

Hey ever had Peet's coffee???
I've got the same K&N units, and would put a taller filter if it didn't interfere with the rain tray, which I need here in "bama. My brother also had v-stacks for the carbs when I bought the car 15 yrs ago (I wonder where they are now...), and he said it definately helped engine behavior to have the stacks on.

sorry....

Your not a left coaster (Peets is in SF). I know a little about your area. So I'll have to ask you if you've been to the Speedie festival.

Oh-hoe, I never thought about the rain tray - I guess I'll have to get the thing together and running first, then measure what's left. I'll probably just polish mine up and get taller filters, they're cheap - I need the tray as well, cause I plan on driving it frequently. I really should use the cash for the rebuild anyway or else it'll never get done.

Never had Peet's coffee, but I've had Richard's coffee. He works down the hallway, and I mooch a few cups from him everyday.
Not sure if I want to go to a Speedo festival..........

The 4" oval filters will fit under the rain tray, as long as your manifolds aren't too long. I have a pair of "medium" manifolds on my '71, with CB Performance 4" ovals, and the rain tray.

Somewhere, I thik there is a spec. on the minimum distance between the filter top downward to the top of the stacks. Seems to me it is. 1.5 inches (maybe 1.25 inches), I don't remember and I don't remember my reference for that spec., old age, I suppose. Weber dealers ought to know. But, this must be factored in when calulating your clearance from the top of the filters to the bottom of the rain tray.
