Oil Bath air cleaner

Can i run the car without the air cleaner on? For the life of me I can't figure out how it goes on there. Everything seems to be in the way.

Anyone have an engine pic that shows how it goes on?

You can run it without the air cleaner. But it will cut your engine life to a fraction of what it could/should be. All the dirt and dust that the engine will ingest will do a number on the piston rings, the cylinders, and then it will get into the oil system where it will wear out your bearings. Not good.

I haven't removed the whole air cleaner from a 1.7, but I don't remember anything that non-obvious about it... Sorry, no pic immediately available at this moment.

I guess what I meant was for testing purposes not when i am actually drivign the car. Don't all the vacuum hoses have to be hooked up for the car to run properly?

The ones that get hooked up to the air cleaner are "seeing" the ambient air pressure--pretty much the same as what is in the engine bay. So no, you don't have to have all of the hoses hooked up. All the ones that connect at or after the throttle body, yes. But the ones that hook to the air cleaner or the rubber boot between it and the throttle body, nope.

Not a good idea to leave them unplugged over the long term, of course, but not a problem for testing.

That's on a 1.7 or a 2.0, with D-jet EFI. This does not apply to the 1.8's L-jetronic FI!! Anything "downstream" of the air flow meter in one of those cars must be plugged in or blocked off!
