Engine Rebuild stuff
 

Hey guys,

I have a couple of questions.

1. I am planning on completely rebuilding my engine by myself. Please note that I am a poor college student with a very limited budget. Anyway, I am looking for overall tips that I should know before beginning this project. I have never done anything like this before, and I'd like to have some idea as to what to expect.

2. I am also looking for detailed pictures of the fuel injection system. It doesn't really matter at this point whether it's the 1.8 or the 2.0. I am simply looking for the proper layout. My car is carburetted, and I am trying to understand the logistics. I can read all I want, but I have a feeling it will help if I have some pictures to go with it.

There's a video that walks you through a Type IV engine rebuild (assuming no surprises and a very good machine shop). It's put out by "Bug Me Video", and features Jake Raby, whom you may have seen posting here already. Between that, the Haynes book, and Tom Wilson's "How To Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine", you should have just about all the info you need. We do not carry the video (Hmm, need to suggest that!) but we do carry the other two books.

You can see pictures of the FI (1.8 and 2.0 both; 1.8 is L-jetronic and 2.0 and 1.7 use D-jetronic) in the Haynes manual. A general layout of the hoses (and therefore the parts that the hoses connect to) can be found here:

I was thinking of you when I believe it was ebay, one of the guys, Import engine? of Calif group had a complete 1.7 for sale for $1500. The guy is reputable and looks good. That would certainly shorten your time to get back into the seat.
