Painted Sails
Hi all. I'm just getting arround to having my car painted and was wondering what to do with the sails.
What is the story with painted sails? Did any cars come like that from the factory? Does anyone have a good reason to leve them or paint them? Do you just fill the holes where the chrome trim used to attach? Andy |

Check the photos here at Pelican Parts for the Petersen Museum gettogether. There are cars with original tops and sails and those with painted tops and sails. Decide which you like and do it, not what someone else tells you what you should do. Good luck

If you're talking about the sail panels and rollbar, I believe that ALL sail panels came from the factory painted to match the car, and the vinyl covering went on as an optional extra, part of the appearance group. But vinyl always covered painted metal, so all cars started out as completely painted. I could be wrong about this, but I think it's what I read in my 914 Restoration Guide, whose author escapes me. And it makes sense from an assembly line aspect to have painted all cars completely and then applied the vinyl trim to only some of them.
You thus have the option of having your entire car painted, and then you can see how you like it without the vinyl. You can then add the vinyl later, if you like. As for the chrome, I have seen cars without vinyl-covered sail panels have both chrome and painted black trim here. But I believe there is always trim in place, regardless. Again, from the 914 Restoration Guide. |
