FI Problem of Some Kind
 

Car: 1974 914 1.8 L-jet, all stock

Problem: The car is hard to start and will idle rough once it gets started. Once the car is idling, if i snap the throttle it is reluctant to rev the engine. What generally happens is i snap open the throttle, the revs drop for a second and then the engine revs up. I went to the back and was snapping the throttle by hand, and i noticed that if i snapped it at idle, i would feel a puff of air shoot out from somewhere, and it feels like its coming from somewhere near the distributor.

Anybody know/have an idea whats going on?

It sounds like you may have a leak in the intake system. I would start looking for loose or cracked hoses. I've used a trick to finding intake leaks, the first is to spray carb cleaner on parts of the intake system. If you spray on the leak, then engine rpm will drop temporarily. Carb cleaner doesn't burn well. Once you've isolated where the leak is, then you need to fix it and spray around again. Repeat until you have no leaks. Remember you may have more than one leak.

robin, thanks for the carb cleaner idea, worked like a charm. turns out that the plastic tee by the air intake distributor was cracked a little. also needs a new air filter. figures i would check everything but the blatantly obvious:p
