Well... the 72 (all 914's for that matter) came with a version on the 901. The 70-72 came with a tail shifter the 73+ came with a side shifter.

Do you mean you want to put a side shifter in a 72, or do you mean that you want to put a 915 (72+ 911's had a 915 which is a stronger trans than the 901 but is made for a rear engine car) in the car like the 916?

The side shift conversion is easy, you just need to get the parts from a 73+. To put in a 915/930/G-50 you need to talk to an aftermarket supplier and be ready to shell out the big bucks. Vellios has a kit and I beleive Patrick Motorsports does too. The 901 handles 200-225 hp pretty well if it is good shape.

In a word, yes. You can put a 901 tranny in a 914. You can fake the linkage if it is necessary.

Why do you want to have five reverse gears and only one forward gear?

Um, I think i've missed a big part of the 914 tranny... What do we have, I thought it was a 901. Guess I'm wrong.

The 914 and the 911 both used the 901 trans, but the 914 has the ring gear running the other way....and has different serial numbers. That way you can be assured of having the correct number of forward....the rest is the same....external shift linkages are different but as far as I know can be converted....but why would ya want to? There are plenty of them around...

i know porsche people don't like to here this but the reason i want the 911 901 trans is for a v-8. i know the ring and pinion have to be flip. But is this any better than my 72 tailshifter. Both would shift from the back. Or did i look at the 911 901 wrong. I don't have it yet so I don't recall what it look like.

If you are putting a V8 in a 914...then use the later model 914 trans...it is called a 901 side shifter....

The earlier model is the same but with a different style linkage. The side shifter has a shorter linkage which is less troublesome....both can handle up to 300 hp in stock form....

Some have been modified by a stornger intermediate plate and locking out first gear...

If you are considering 300hp +, then you should consider the 915 transaxle. Isn't is rated to handle 600hp???
