more stupid ignition problems
well,
my car ran for about a week. i had put a new ignition switch in and it was fine, i did have to turn the key pretty far to get it to start though. i washed it this morning before i took it for another alignment attempt. it started fine when i took off for the shop, then i get up there and the it won't even turn over. we jumped the starter to get it into the shop then they couldn't do the alignment because of the wheels i have on my car, but anyways. i just took the ignition switch back out and it's not broken! what else can go wrong with this that won't let it turn over. any ideas, i'm tired of driving my truck! scotty |

One of those Murphy's Law 914 electrical problems that acts up at most inconvenient time or whenever away from the garage. What's interesting is that it stopped immediately after you changed out the switch so seems to point to something in that area. Are the wires and terminals on the switch plug in good condition? Check the terminals - maybe the starter +12V and starter relay wire terminals got too hot and they are not making good contact at the switch. Check the tumbler mechanism and make sure it's rotating the switch properly. Hook a continuity light across the switch and repeatedly switch it on and off a bunch of times to ensure it always contacts. One other thing - I don't know if your '72 has the seat belt relay under the passenger seat, but if it does and someone did a poor job of jumpering the yellow starter wires together to bypass it, maybe there's an intermittent connection there. Best of luck finding it!
