Wiper connections from scratch.
So Im trying to get the wiper wired up without using the stock switch.
I have it worked out as RED - Fast speed directly opposite RED - Slow speed Black - Ground Yellow - Constant hot for return to down position. I cant figure out what the connection accross from the Yellow is for.. Any ideas so I dont need a halon extinguisher? ;-) -Rich Hilgersom ![]() |

I just had my wipers apart. That connector should have a "green w/white stripe" wire from the harness connecting to it. In the Haynes manual it appears to have something to do with returning the wipers to the park position. That connector seems to connect inside the wiper gear box to a small pad that powers the wipers until they park. If you put a voltmeter on that terminal you should see 0v. Run the wipers and you should see 12volt on it until the wipers park, then 0v.
Now, this is somewhat of a guess since I'm deciphering this from the Haynes manual and my own experience. YMMV and be careful! Your yellow alligator clip is the power to the wipers, would be a "red" wire from the harness.

I was just thinking about it more and have come up with this . . .
When you turn off the wipers they have to "park" somehow even though the switch has been turned off. This is done through that terminal in question that would have a "green/white" wire from the harness. When the wipers are running in either slow or fast this wire is +12v when the wipers are about at half cycle. When you kill the wiper switch this terminal continues to be +12v, bypassing the switch until the electrical connection is broken on the pads within the wiper gear box. At this point the wipers should be parked. Works the same way when you "pulse" the wipers to sweep mist away. To test put a voltmeter across that terminal and ground. You'll see it be +12v at about half stroke (or less) across the windshield and until the wipers park, then you should have 0 volts. Let me know if this is right??

The unit works with just the three connectors. Fast, Slow, and Park.
As near as I can tell the connector in question is ground, but only when the switch is fully pushed in. Im not sure why its there though. The spade for chassis ground (black in the pic) seems to do the job. Im going to take the motor apart and see. I'll post and update when I figure it out. Thanks, Rich Hilgersom |

Found the reason
http://www.type2.com/library/identifi/bosterm.htm WIPER MOTOR 30 input from + battery terminal, direct 31 Return line to battery - battery terminal or ground, direct 31b Return line to negative battery terminal or ground, via switch or relay (switched negative) 53 Wiper motor, input (+) 53a Wiper (+), self-parking switch-off 53b Wiper (shunt winding) http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/schem/wiper2.htm When mounted the intertia from wiper would likely push the motor past the park position and make it run constantly. So that last connector becomes a ground/return and brakes the motor in the park position. Stopping the inertia. Sooo... I need another toggle...on/on/on. One position for ground OFF One for slow One for fast Hmmm dont think they make that animal.. Ideas? Thanks, Rich Hilgersom Further REF: Intermitant KIT http://www.qkits.com/serv/qkits/velleman/pages/K2599.asp If the connections in your car aren't numbered, you can easily find the numbers with the help of a testlamp: Connect one of the leads of the lamp to the negative of the accumulator (frame), and with the other lead you can test the terminals of the motor. Put the dashboard switch in the OFF position. There is now only one terminal that makes the lamp go on 53a. Put the dashboard switch in the low speed position. Now there are two terminals which make the lamp glow continuously: 53a, which we found already, and 53. There is a third terminal that makes the lamp go on, but where it is switched off every time the wipers are in their parking zone: this is terminal 31b. Put the dashboard switch in the high speed position. Now the lamp is only lit at terminal 53b. There is one terminal where the lamp never lights: the negative of the motor, 31. Well, there's no such toggle switch I'm aware of, that's what a rotary switch does. So seems you're wanting something that the stock switch already does. But I'll give it some more thought.

This page says toggle switch but they may have meant rotary...

Final note...
Went with a rotary switch Cole Hersee 75600-04 Variable Intermintant with push to wash (electric) http://www.colehersee.com/pdf/master_cat/m_wiper.PDF Wiring diagram http://www.colehersee.com/pdf/IFs/IF-127.pdf For $48 plus shipping it came out cheaper than a Bug wiper switch and another toggle for the washer pump! http://161.58.79.191/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/cgi-bin/smpagegen.exe?U+scstore+sttw8090ff70df70+-p+-c+scstore.cfg+75600-04 -Rich Hilgersom |

Last update...
Well either I burned the switch or it came that way. It never worked. Since I cant return it I decided to go with a ColeHersee 75228-03 (standard cant-break-it rotary) with "push to wash". W909 $14.37 (Warning $9 shipping to West Coast) http://www.buspartswarehouse.com/products/switches/type/Wiper/0,0,0,21,10.html It wires up just like http://www.b-hepworth.com/pages/80110nm.html says Wiring the Motor Unit to a Rotary Switch Motor Switch 31b (self park reversal feed) position P 53 (low speed) position L 53a (self park) and positive position B 53b (high speed) position H 31 (earth connection) Battery (-) Washer Pump position W Where 31 is the ground tab on the motor. The numbers are on the wiper connections. - Rich Hilgersom |
