four restored 914's or this ... ?
 

VW classic was last weekend and I bet he still has it. Nobody in there right mind is going to pay almost 50k for a VW bus. Well, this is California, I guess anything is possible. I would take the 914-6's instead. At least you can drive them.

It's not even really that nice. For 50k I would be expecting even the inside of the fender wells to be perfectly straight, and every inch of it to be perfect, and it's not . And not rare enough to be worth 50k any way. I've seen ones like it for between 15-20k, and I wouldn't put that one as worth any more than that.

Personally I wouldn't want one any way, but I wouldn't mind a double cab slammed and with a nice big type 4 motor....

HELL YA! Don't get me wrong, i love 914's, but the safari VW bus, only a factory 914-6 will be worth the amount that that beauty will, and its not as rare. If i had the dough, it would be that bus with a 3.2 carrera, 17" cup 1's, and a trailer pulling my 9146 gt! In 10 years, you can pick up a 914 for probably not much more than they are now, maybe a few grand more. That bus will only get more rarer and more diserable

Heh... I might think about $50K if it already has the 3.2+ in it... ;)

If you cut this one up for those mods, you'd have a lotta 'Dubbers ready to lynch you.

This looks like a case of someone who added up what they spent on a restoration and is trying to get their money back out of it. Which is a pretty good way to keep a car, not sell it. Drop the price to half of that and it'll sell quickly, I bet.

Honestly i couldn't pull myself to doing that to an original. I'd probably pick up the same year, turn it into a safari and go 3.2 with cup 1 rims. I've seen those original safari rusted tubs go for over $12k. They're just so rare. To bad i wasn't born earlier...by 20 years. I'd picked up a couple busses and some 356 Carreras when no one wanted them due to maintance. The goal now is to figure out whats going to be rare 40 years from now... I've got the pack rat gene, all i need is the space.

I read an article in VW trends a few months ago talking about how rich Japanese are actually paying 50g's for PERFECTLY restored early bus's. The vehicle must be perfect due to gov. regulations.

The Japanese have very strict laws governing this sort of thing. The vehicle must be up to OEM NEW specs in every way. No modificatiions of any kind are allowed. Even cars with only 50k miles have to go through an intense inspection before they are allowed back on the road. This is why we get so many JDM front clips imported into the country.

Anyway, the fact is that there are actually interested "investors" in Japan, and possibly other countries, who would pay such a sum for a perfect example of an early bus or bug, conv.ghia etc...

BTW, perfect this one is not IMHO
